The Local 9 Training Center (Training Center) is available only to card-carrying members of IBEW Local No. 9. From the time a person working under Local 9's jurisdiction first applies for membership to well into their journeyman's career, the Training Center offers a wide variety of specialized training in every aspect of the work covered under our jurisdiction. All courses are taught by Local 9 journeymen who are the top trained and experienced personnel in their particular field.
The Training Center is basically divided into two parts. One part consists of courses that are required by Local No. 9 in order for members to apply for their journeyman's card. These required courses are collectively known as the Lineman Training School (LTS). The other part consists of a variety of other technical skill-building courses that can be taken by members on an as-needed basis to learn or improve their job skills.
Members' first experience with the Training Center comes at the time they apply to become a member at the Hall. After their applications are filled out, they are added to the LTS registration list. They are also given a date within the next month to attend a CPR and a Flagger's Certification class. They receive a card that shows they successfully completed each of these two courses.
After a short period of time, they are contacted to start the LTS program. They are given a start date and schedule to begin the required two-year program. After successfully completing all the courses of the LTS program, they receive a certificate which qualifies them to apply for a journeyman's card. During the first year, LTS courses are 1 to 4 nights in length. All three of the second year courses are 11 weeks long, held once a week, plus a one night COMET class.
Any member can register for any of the other technical training courses offered at the Training Center at any time. There are different ways to register. You can contact the Training Center and request to be placed on the list for a class, or you can register here on our website using the online registration form. A registrant's name is then entered into a computer database that generates a pick list. When the class is available, prospective students are contacted via phone according to their position on the list. They remain on the list until such time as they take the class, turn it down, or request to be taken off of the class list.
The courses are typically once a week for 3 hours, generally from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. The number of weeks each course runs varies according to the material covered in each individual course. After finishing each course, a certificate of completion is issued. |
